Pilgrim Baptist Church of Rockford, Illinois is prayerfully seeking a pastor who is biblically grounded, spiritually mature, compassionate, and able to lead the congregation into its next season of ministry. Pilgrim Baptist Church has served the Rockford community for more than 108 years and continues to seek a shepherd who will preach the Word faithfully, care for the congregation, strengthen discipleship, and represent the church with integrity in the city and beyond.

The ideal pastor will be a humble servant-leader who loves Jesus Christ, honors the authority of Scripture, values Baptist doctrine and ordinances, and is committed to worship, prayer, evangelism, community outreach, and congregational unity.

Primary Responsibilities

Preaching and Teaching

The pastor will prepare and deliver biblically faithful sermons that clearly apply Scripture to everyday life. The pastor will also lead Bible studies, classes, and discipleship pathways that help members grow in faith, doctrine, and Christian living.

Pastoral Care

The pastor will provide spiritual care through visitation, counseling, prayer, and support. This includes ministering to members during seasons of illness, grief, transition, and celebration. The pastor will also officiate weddings, funerals, baptisms, dedications, and other sacred occasions as needed.

Worship and Ordinances

The pastor will help lead worship in a traditional Baptist setting and oversee the faithful observance of baptism and communion. Pilgrim Baptist Church recognizes baptism and communion as the two ordinances observed by the church.

Leadership and Administration

The pastor will work with church staff, deacons, trustees, committees, ministers, and lay leaders to provide spiritual and organizational leadership. Responsibilities include helping establish ministry direction, planning, reporting, communication, and follow-through.

Discipleship and Spiritual Development

The pastor will call the church to prayer, spiritual formation, service, and mission. The pastor will mentor leaders, develop volunteers, encourage Christian education, and equip members to serve both inside and outside the church.

Community Engagement

The pastor will represent Pilgrim Baptist Church well in Rockford and build bridges with schools, civic leaders, ministries, churches, and community partners. The church desires a pastor who will support outreach, advocate for education, and help reset and strengthen the church climate through discipleship and conflict resolution.

Desired Qualifications

The preferred candidate should have:

  • Ordination, denominational standing, or appropriate ministry credentials
  • At least five years of ministry experience
  • Strong preaching, teaching, and communication skills
  • Ability to lead teams, ministries, and administrative processes
  • Ability to connect with the congregation and the broader community
  • Willingness to complete committee-approved checks, including background review, educational alignment, and polity alignment
